We present a general formulation for the analysis of fluid-structure interaction problems using the particle finite element method (PFEM). The key feature of the PFEM is the use of a Lagrangian description to model the motion of nodes (particles) in both the fluid and the structure domains. Our experience with this method indicates that rapid rates of convergence can be achieved in many cases. Part I of the paper presents the theory, whereas Part II is devoted to a field test of the finite element method and to a comparison of the results with those obtained from a one‐dimensional finite difference model.
